Abstract

"The Rise of Asia" has become one of the hottest topics in the world media and in a variety of international economic and political forums. Are we witnessing a new "tectonic shift" in global economy on a par with the one which brought about the global ascendance of Europe a few centuries ago? What will be the political and cultural impacts of current economic and financial changes in the global balance of power? How sustainable is the current rise in Asian economies? These questions are occupying the minds of specialists and lay public alike.

At the concluding session of the 10th Conference of Asian Studies in Israel, we would like to refer these questions to the representatives of four major Asian countries, who will present their perspectives and prospects on the possible coming of "The Asian Century." The Ambassadors of China, India, Japan and Korea will outline some of the major achievements of their respective countries in recent decades, explore the challenges for the further development, and present their views about Asian regional integration. The panel will be moderated by Prof. Menachem Ban Sasson, President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
